- "The historical development of Russia's alumina production capacity is closely connected with the development of the Soviet Union's aluminum industry, although alumina production technology was developed in Russia prior to the revolution in 1917. In 1889, the Austrian chemist Bayere, who at the time worked in St. Petersburg's Tenteleev chemical plant, patented the technology for the spontaneous decomposition of aluminate liquor. In 1892, when he worked at a plant in Elabuga, he patented the method for the dissolution of the alumina in bauxite by means of treating it with caustic alkali in autoclaves. Despite these developments, however, Russia's lack of proven bauxite reserves as well as its limited power generation capacity delayed the development of industrial-scale aluminum production."
